NICE TO SEE YOU

Back in 1972 when I was a freshman at Marietta College in Marietta, Ohio; there was a junior student named Mike who was blind and lived in the Russell Hall dormitory. Mike was a pleasant fellow and when you spoke with him he would always say "nice to see you." I always marveled at his ability to find his way to his different classes, the dining room hall and everywhere else on the hilly Marietta campus.

Mike was a victim of a couple of pranks at Russell Hall from what I was told. I personally lived in Parsons Hall so I had no involvement in these episodes. In the Russell Hall bathroom on his floor one time the fellow students took off the toilet seat in one of the stalls. Mike used to use his cane in the bathroom to check whether the toilet seat was up or down by swinging the cane over the toilet. If the cane didn't hit the upraised toilet seat then he knew the seat was down. So, in this case Mike sat right in the toilet bowl as his cane didn't hit any toilet seat.

Another time students on Mike's floor set Mike's clock ahead at night and they all got up at around 3:30 in the morning and started taking showers, getting dressed, etc.. as the time on Mike's braille clock was set ahead to a little after 8:00 am. They woke Mike up and said "Mike you better hurry or you'll be late for your first class".

Mike got up, got dressed and went out the dorm door. Needless to say he was a little bit early for his 9:00 am class.
